President
Eddie Davenport, an Alcornite from Lorman, MS attended Jefferson County High School, Fayette, MS. At Alcorn State University Eddie’s most honorable accomplishment was becoming the Student Government Association President 2008-2009 and graduate with honors from ASU in 2009. Throughout the years Eddie has served has a great role model for his peers, community, and church. After completion of studies at Alcorn State, Eddie did a study abroad in Visakhapatnam, India with the Minority Health International Research Team. Eddie continued his ambitious education by attending The Mississippi School for Therapeutic Massage, Jackson, MS. A year later Eddie was accepted into Jackson State University’s Master of Public Health Program(MPH), completing his Master’s in Epidemiology and Bio-statistics in April 2012, and where Eddie became a member of the Graduate School Association and a member of the Society for Public Health Education professional organization. While Eddie was completing his master’s he also worked for the Mississippi State Department of Health and provided tutoring for Upward Bound, Tougaloo College, Tougaloo, MS. Towards the end of completing his master’s, Eddie gave much thought about opportunities which would get him closer to obtaining his goal to make it meaningful to educate and help with the paradigm shift in Public Health Education. Exploring opportunities and applying to several universities for PhD/ DrPh programs in Health Promotion and Education, Health Education, Behavioral Health Education, Eddie was awarded a full fellowship to further his education at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL in Health Education. Eddie is currently a second year PhD student at Southern Illinois University, where he is a member of the Black Graduate Student Association and President of Eta Sigma Gamma, a national Health Education professional organization. Eddie is taking his next step in accomplishing his goals.
Eddie believes that “One must not follow where the path may lead, but instead go where there is no path and leave a trail for others to follow”. His philosophy in life is to allow your free mind to expand on the opportunities that are presented.

Heather L. Carney
My name is Heather Carney, serving as the Alpha Alpha Chapter ESG Vice President. I am looking forward to working with those involved with ESG in fostering opportunities to grow professionally by providing learning experiences outside of the classroom. As a second year Master in Public Health student at Southern Illinois University, I will graduate in the Spring of 2014. Currently I am working as a Graduate Assistant at the Center for Rural Health and Social Services working on a variety of projects related to Coordinated School Health as well as Worksite Wellness in addition to working as a Teaching Assistant. I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary/Middle Education with a concentration in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse. My hope is to combine my passion for educating youth and mobilizing communities in health and wellness. [email protected]

My name is Katrina Galati and I am Eta Sigma Gamma, Alpha Alpha Chapter's Secretary for the year of 2013-2014. I am a junior at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in the undergraduate program. I am currently working to complete my bachelors of science degree in Community Health Education. My future plans are to complete my master’s in public health at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. My health-related interests include obesity, nutrition, disabilities, health disparities, prevention programing and promotion. Beyond my involvement with ESG, i am a proud member of Delta Zeta. I love listening to music, exercising, spending time with friends and family, traveling, and scuba diving.

Gul Leo
My name is Leo Makhdoom and I am Eta Sigma Gamma, Alpha Alpha Chapter's Historian for the 2013-2014 academic year.My goal as a historian is to create as well as continue projects that cultivate communication between members, increase knowledge on academic opportunities for growth and networking as to benefit Alpha Alpha members, and generate interest in our chapter.
I am currently in my second year of pursuing a MPH Degree. I received a B.D.S (2007) from Baqai Medical University in Dentistry with an emphasis in Oral Maxilofacial Surgery. My future goals include obtaining a Masters in Health Education as to pursue a carrier in dental public health residency and community development and preventing oral diseases from the society. My research interests include environmental health, emergency preparedness. In my free time I love to travel, teach salsa dance. Cooking & photography are my other passions.

Bethany Kies
My name is Bethany Kies and I am the treasurer for the Alpha Alpha Chapter of ESG this year. Currently, I'm working to complete my Ph.D. in Health Education from SIU by the Spring of 2014. I have a MPH in Community Health Education (2011) and a B.S. in Community Health Education (2003) from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse. Beyond my involvement with ESG, I am also an instructor for three undergraduate health education courses at SIU and one at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse during the school year, and I help to coordinate the 3-week long youth camp, Saluki Kids Academy, in the summer. My research interests include, policy, systems and environmental planning, health disparities, community-academic partnerships and professional preparation programming. After graduation I plan to be tenure track professor at a public university working in health education and health promotion with an emphasis in public health and social justice. My name is Rakshya Basnet, a current second year MPH student in Health Education. I am the Sergeant-At-Arms for Eta Sigma Gamma, Alpha Alpha Chapter for this academic year. I received my BS in Community Health and; Foods & Nutrition from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 2012. I have interned with American Lung Association, Women’s Center and Employee Wellness Center during my undergrad. Currently I am an instructor for two undergraduate course classes- HED 101 Foundations of Human Health.
